Follow these instructions to ensure that your student experiences the best audio quality, even if you use Zoom for other applications.  If these settings are not set exactly as described below, audio heard by the teacher or fellow students may be garbled or suppressed.

  • Smartphone, iPad, or Tablet
  • Chromebook

Internet Connection and Location

  1. Choose a quiet location – Background noise severely disrupts the student’s audio
  2. If possible, the location should be near or on the same floor as your Wifi Router – Weak connections reduce audio and video quality and can even cause your child’s video to freeze completely.
  3. During your child’s lesson or class, avoid using your home’s Wifi connection for streaming TV or movies, gaming, videoconferencing, or other high-bandwidth applications.

PC or Laptop (Windows/Mac)

The steps below are illustrated in this video 
  1. Go to https://zoom.us/test, then click Join Meeting
  2. If prompted, click “Open Zoom Meetings”
  3. If prompted, Allow and Connect To audio and video
  4. When the test meeting starts
    1. Move your mouse over the lower left corner of your Zoom screen. 
    2. Click the small arrow (^) next to the microphone, then select Audio Settings.
    3. UN-check “Automatically adjust volume”
    4. Set the volume slider to 75% (three-quarters the way up)
    5. Look in the lower right corner and click the ADVANCED button
    6. At the top of the next screen, CHECK “Show in-meeting option to Enable Original Sound”
    7. Change Suppress Persistent Background Noise to DISABLED
    8. Change Suppress Intermittent Background Noise to DISABLED
    9. Close the settings box
  5. Move your mouse over the upper left corner of your Zoom screen.  If you see “Turn on original Sound”, click to turn on. 
  6. Confirm the message now says “Turn off original sound” (this means original sound IS turned on).
  7. Click in the corner of the screen to Leave the test meeting

iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet

  1. Install the current version of the Zoom App from Google Play Store or Apple app store. NOTE:  The app was updated on Friday April 10.
    1. After installing and opening the app, click the Settings icon
    2. Click Meeting
    3. Scroll down to Use Original Sound and turn it ON
    4. Exit Settings
  2. *** IMPORTANT – You must do this at the start of EVERY lesson or class ***
    1. If prompted, allow and connect to video and audio
    2. As soon as you are connected, tap your screen, then select “More •••”
    3. *** Click “Enable Original Sound” *** – This setting must be enabled EVERY time you use Zoom

Chromebook

  1. Remove the Zoom Chrome Extension if it is installed
    1. Open Chrome
    2. Click the three dots at the upper right
    3. Click Settings
    4. On the left side, click Extensions
    5. If you see the Zoom extension, Remove it
  2. Install the Zoom app
    1. Click the circle on the lower left corner of your screen
    2. Click the Google Play Store icon (if you don’t see it, click the small arrow ^)
    3. Search for Zoom
    4. Install Zoom Cloud Meetings
    5. After installing, click Open
    6. Click the Settings icon
    7. Click Meeting
    8. Scroll down to Use Original Sound and turn it ON
    9. Exit Settings.
