Follow these instructions to ensure that your student is seen and heard by the teacher and audience.

These settings are specific to music and theatre performance.

If Zoom settings are not exactly as described below, your child’s performance audio and video and may be severely degraded.


Internet Connection and Location (all devices)

  1. Choose a quiet location – Background noise severely disrupts the student’s audio
  2. If possible, be on the same floor and close to  your Wi-Fi Router – Weak connections will cause your video to degrade or freeze completely.
  3. Avoid using your home’s Wifi network for streaming TV, movies, gaming, or other Zoom calls during your child’s performance.

PC or Laptop (Windows/Mac)

  1. Go to https://zoom.us/download and DOWNLOAD THE CURRENT VERSION OF ZOOM Client for Meetings.  DO NOT RELY ON ANY PRIOR INSTALLATION OF ZOOM.
  2. IF YOU DID NOT INSTALL TODAY’S version of Zoom, GO BACK TO STEP 1.
  3. Go to https://zoom.us/test, then click Join Meeting
  4. If prompted:
    • Click “Open Zoom Meetings”
    • Allow use of mic and camera
    • Connect To audio and video
  5. When the test meeting starts
    1. In the lower left corner of your Zoom screen, click the arrow (^) next to the Video symbol and select Video Settings.
      • CHECK both boxes: Original Ratio, HD
    2. Click the small arrow (^) next to the microphone, then select Audio Settings:
      1. UN-check “Automatically adjust volume”
      2. Set the microphone volume (blue dot) to 75% (three-quarters the way up)
      3. Set “Suppress Background Noise” to LOW
      4. CHECK “Show in-meeting option to Enable Original Sound”
      5. CHECK “High Fidelity Audio”
    3. If you are using a Windows PC or Laptop, click the ADVANCED button (at the bottom)
      1. Set “Signal Processing by Windows” to DISABLED
    4. Close the settings box
  6. *** VERY IMPORTANT *** – You must do this at the start of EVERY lesson, rehearsal, and performance ***  (Zoom will NOT remember this setting):
    1. Look in the upper left of your Zoom screen.
    2. If you see “Turn on original Sound”, click to turn ON original sound.
    3. Confirm the screen now says: “Turn off original sound” (this means original sound IS on).
  7. Click in the corner of the screen to Leave the test meeting

iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet

  1. Install the CURRENT version of the Zoom App from Google Play Store or Apple app store. 
    1. IF YOU DID NOT INSTALL TODAY’S version of Zoom, GO BACK TO STEP 1.
    2. After installing and opening the app, click the Settings icon
    3. Click Meeting
    4. Scroll down to Use Original Sound and turn it ON
    5. Exit Settings
  2. If prompted, allow and connect to video and audio
  3. *** IMPORTANT – You must do this at the start of EVERY lesson, rehearsal, and performance ***  (Zoom will NOT remember this setting):
    • Tap your screen, then select “More •••”
    • Click “Enable Original Sound” 
    • If you do not see Enable Original Song, leave the meeting and complete step 2 above.

Chromebook

  1. Note: Some Chromebooks are not compatible with the Zoom Cloud Meetings app which is required for MTC’s activities.  If you are unable to complete the following instructions, use a different device.
  2. Install the Zoom app (THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE ZOOM CHROME EXTENSION YOU USUALLY USE)
      1. Install TODAY’s version of the Zoom Cloud Meetings app from the Google Play Store – OR – Use the instructions below.
        1. Click the circle on the lower left corner of your screen
        2. Click the Google Play Store icon (if you don’t see it, click the small arrow ^)
        3. Search for Zoom
        4. Install Zoom Cloud Meetings
        5. After installing, click Open
      2. IF YOU DID NOT INSTALL ZOOM TODAY’S VERSION OF ZOOM, GO BACK TO STEP 1.
      3. Click the Settings icon
      4. Click Meeting
      5. Scroll down to Use Original Sound and turn it ON
      6. Exit Settings.
  3. *** IMPORTANT – You must do this at the start of EVERY lesson, rehearsal, and performance ***  (Zoom WILL NOT REMEMBER this setting):
    • Tap your screen, then select “More •••”
    • Click “Enable Original Sound” 
    • If you do not see Enable Original Sound, leave the meeting and go back to step 1 above.
